1. Types of High Schools

 There are many types of high schools in Japan. They can be divided in the following ways.

Public high schools and private high schools

 High Schools can be divided primarily between public high schools and private high schools.

Public High School
These are schools run by Yamagata Prefecture or Yamagata City. Schools fees are relatively inexpensive. However, you can only apply to one public high school at a time and entrance examinations are relatively difficult.
Private High School
These are schools run privately. School fees are more expensive than those of public schools but each school has its own merits. Furthermore, it is possible to apply to more than one private school at a time.

Course distinction

 Japanese high schools can be divided in the following manner depending on the learning schedule, methods, and content.

  1. Day classes

    Classes are generally held during the day for 6 hours a day, for 3 years.

  2. Part time

    Classes are generally held in the evening for 4 hours a day, for 4 years.(Classes at Kajo Gakuen are offered in the morning, afternoon, or at night. There is also a system for achieving graduation in 3 years.)

  3. Correspondence

    Classes at school are held twice a month (schooling) while the rest of the time studies are done at home.

Curriculum distinction

 In Japan, besides the high schools with the standard curriculum, there are also technical high schools where it is possible to specialize in agriculture, industry, commerce, etc. Some schools will have both the standard curriculum and a technical (specialized) curriculum. Curriculums can generally be divided into the following three categories:

  1. Normal
  2. Specialty
    (Sciences and Mathematics, Physical Education, Music, Agriculture, Commerce, Fisheries, Home Economics, Nursing)
  3. General
