5.Swimming Trials, Sports Day, Ski Class,Study Report

Swimming Trials (The final swimming class of the year)

 The name might vary according to schools. At the end of August, all classes show the results of their swimming classes to the whole school in the school's swimming pool. Some schools will hold the event on a similar day for all classes while other schools will have a set schedule. Every grade has different fields of competition. Students each chose one field and try to break their personal records.

Bring parasols, hats, and towels when you go to support the competitors. The pool area can be very hot and slippery. It is recommended to wear beach sandals or walk barefooted. No shoes are allowed on the poolside.

Sports Day

 Sports day is held in spring or in autumn on the school's grounds. All the students participate in this event that lasts a whole day (8:00 to 15:00). Points are attributed to winners of the different competitions that are divided per class, individuals, or groups. Points are also given to cheering groups. Students are divided in to red teams and white teams. Everyone encourages the participants to do their best. Upper grade students will have many responsibilities, including preparation, supervision, and cleaning afterwards.

 Although it is not a school event, some districts organize districts' sports competition. Children and adults in every district or neighborhood can participate in this sports event that promotes friendship amongst school districts and neighborhoods.

Ski Class

 Participating grades vary from school to school. This event is to enjoy the natural environment of the snowy mountains while skiing safely. This event is aimed at improving one's skiing ability but also at teaching group movement, manners on ski slopes, and respect for the rules.

 Some schools have 1st and 2nd graders go to the Yamagata Nature Center for Children (Yamagata Shonen Shizen no Ie) and sled on the snow.

Clothes

The tops of the mountains have sub-zero temperatures.
Wear layered clothing to keep warm:

  • Skiwear
  • Hat
  • Gloves (Ones made from waterproof material are ideal.)
  • Towel to remove sweat on the back
  • Facemask or neck warmer to keep out the cold when the weather is bad

Ski Class

Study Report

 The name varies from school to school. It is an opportunity to show the results of one's daily studies and recognize others' abilities. Notices will be sent to the guardians. Reports are not only done in the gymnasium, but also in classrooms and exhibitions might be held in the corridors of the school.
