7. Club Activities

Almost all students will join a club when they enter junior high school. Club activities are held after classes or on days off. Club activities are an important experience for students as they do what they are interested in with students from the other grades, too (7th, 8th and 9th grade students all participate together in the respective clubs). Sports clubs and cultural clubs might vary according to schools but most of the schools have the following clubs:

  • Depending on the activity, parents may need to transport children to and from practices or competitions.
  • Depending on the activity, money for uniform and equipment may be required.

A citywide (all of the schools in Yamagata city) Sports Competition is held in June amongst the various sports clubs. Winners might go to the prefectural competition, then the national competition. Cultural clubs have the opportunity to present their activities during chorus contests, study reports, and other events. Guardians are invited to observe the competitions, study reports, and other presentations of the different clubs.
