Road Traffic and Riding a Bicycle

  • If you are in an accident, please report the incident to the school.
  • People must walk on the right side of the street while cars and bicycles must proceed on the left side.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street. If there are traffic signals present, wait for the walk signal to cross. Do not cross in front of or close behind cars.
  • Ride your bicycle safely, as instructed by your guardians.
  • Avoid riding your bicycle during the morning and evening rush hours.
  • Some schools require students to wear helmets when riding bicycles.
  • If it is raining or snowing, or there is an accumulation of snow on the ground, do not ride your bicycle.
  • There are also some schools that ask you to promise not to ride your bicycles when the roads are wet.

Places safe to ride (Places safe to ride might vary according to schools. Please ask your homeroom teacher.)

<1st and 2nd Grades>
  • Public parks and other places judged safe by guardians.
<3rd and 4th Grades>
  • Small roads with light traffic and where no buses are passing.
    3rd graders cannot ride on the roads until they complete the Road Safety Class. Before the Road Safety Class, there are schools that distribute bicycle inspection information similar to the example form that follows. You should not ride on the road even after attending the Road Safety Class if family members do not approve of it.
<5th and 6th Grades>
  • Ride according to your ability. As a rule, do not ride outside of your school district.
  • Every school has areas (national roads, main roads with heavy traffic or bus traffic) where it is forbidden to ride.
  • After the winter ends and the snow melts, guardians should check bicycles and perform basic maintenance before letting their children ride them. Please review the following reference "Bicycle Inspection Test" for details on what to check.
